I am not good at critiques but I wanted to at least make a few comments. If an image the artist presents can evoke emotions and or thoughts, then it is successful. That is all an artist can hope for: that the piece can somehow be understood, feeling conveyed, concepts grasped. This image is extremely thought provoking. It is very emotional. I get a feeling of despair, regret, loneliness. It is a reminder that beautiful people are often the most troubled on the inside. The turning away from the bright sun may indicate a feeling of shame. It conveys that the world to her is bright but she is in the darkness of despair. The jewelry and tattoos humanize the subject and from my own experiences are a symbol of rebellion and trying to find your place in the world. Overall, this piece brought back memories of a time period in my own life.....a very painful and lonely time. The sunshine outside the window may be a symbol of hope that things will eventually get better. These feelings, emotions and thoughts I get from the piece may not be exactly what the artist had in mind but then each person will have a different reaction based on their own experiences. This is an amazing piece in all aspects and very successful in creating an interaction with it's viewers

A girl with waist-length blonde hair sits on a window sill. Although light floods through the window, she curls her body into herself and turns her face down into the shade.

The first thing I notice about this image is the lighting, the brightness of the window, the light reflecting off the blonde hair, all draw attention to the dark dejected expression of the subject. The artist must be applauded for this subtle use of contrast to bring depth to the work.

The image is framed such that the subject is confined by the edges of the image. This contortion conveys to me a sort of claustrophobic and lonely state, added to by the overlapping of limbs. You want to reach out to the girl, but she has been closed off by this box that the audience cannot penetrate, the subject cannot escape.

The tattoos and jewellery on the subject are tactfully chosen such that they do not disturb the balance of the image. They humanise the subject, draw her out as a character that can empathise with. Being a young person myself I feel this small but important touch allows me to interact with the work.

Through this work, the artist has shown great depth of understanding of visual elements as well as how to construct emotion in the form of an image such that the audience is drawn into the visual world. I feel I must rate this artwork highly.
